We offer comprehensive undergraduate and special programmes. They are designed to enhance and consolidate the English language and communication skills of learners; give them a broad understanding of the English language, literature, linguistics and translation; and train them in the skills and values that are essential to our society and socio-economic opportunities. Graduates of our programmes are well prepared for professional careers and graduate study as well as for lifelong learning. They are also very competent to be employed as teachers, translators, editors, media writers, tour guides and public service personnel.

Mission and Vision
•To provide high quality instructions and support services to cater a range of students and community needs;
•To aspire to offer the best preparation possible to ensure success of students in future careers in English;
•To provide the best possible personal and professional preparation to prepare students to make positive contributions (in an effective manner) to their professional disciplines, and to enable them to function in and contribute to the changing global society of which they are a part;
•To enrich the quality of life on campus and throughout the region by promoting the study and appreciation of language, linguistics, literature, literary and cultural history, and art to a variety of audiences, both on and off the campus; and
•To expand the boundaries of knowledge through its commitment to and investment in the scholarly and creative activities of its faculty.
To accomplish the mission, the English Department emphasizes its activities primarily in three fundamental areas: teaching, research and service to the university community. Intrinsically, the Department’s Vision Statement is as follows:
•To provide appropriate environment and instructions that will lead to students success and retention;
•To offer current and innovative curricula and courses to meet the needs of the students and the society;
•To train the students to be professional with appropriate discipline specific abilities and values; and
•To provide opportunities and resources for faculty and students to conduct research.
Goals and Objectives
•To provide students with opportunities to enhance their communication and critical thinking skills in all subjects;
•To foster a positive attitude towards professional development, further studying, and lifelong pursuit of learning;
•To enable students to master the linguistic, technological and scientific aspects of their chosen programme of study;
•To train students with discipline specific skill and values to pursue their further studies and later professional careers, especially in language teaching, linguistics, literature and translation; and
•To conduct research and other forms of creative and scholarly activity in the areas of language, linguistics, literature, language teaching and translation, including historical, theoretical, cultural, empirical, pedagogical, textual, and bibliographical scholarship.
The objectives of the Department of English are in compliance to the objectives of the university and our commitment to language, linguistics, literature, and the arts.
•To familiarize students with relevant concepts, aspects, approaches and perspectives in their chosen programme of study and in the disciplines such as language, linguistics and literature;
•To expand students understanding of the concepts from different perspectives and help them to contribute positively to the discipline and the society;
•To enhance students ability to learn and contribute critically;
•To help students to master the linguistic, technological, and scientific aspects of language, linguistics, literature, language teaching and translation;
•To train students to be well positioned as English language teachers, translators, editors, media writers, tour guides and public service personnel;
•To offer the courses that are relevant to the requirements and needs of students and industry; and
•To develop research skills of student to enable them to analyze and interpret and expand knowledge from a variety of perspectives, their own readings of literature and understanding of language.
The English Department is a part of the College of Sciences and Arts of the University. The Head of the Department reports to the Dean of the College and directs the faculty. He is responsible for the programmes offered by the Department. He is assisted by three coordinators who look after language skills, literature and linguistics courses. There are four committees consisting of the Head of the Department and the faculty members nominated by him to deal with Student Affairs, Faculty Development, Course Evaluation, Examinations and Quality Control.
