The department of Anatomy at the college of Medicine, Northern Border University, was established when the college began in 1430 AH. (2009) it is located in the main building of the college in the male section, ground floor, and serves students of the college of Medicine and the college of Applied Sciences, and more recently the college of Nursing. in the female section, the department was established in the buildings of the college of medicine and the colleges of Applied Sciences and Nursing in the same year it was established in the male section. The department in both male and female sections has a sufficient number of laboratories (dissection halls; a cold room for preserving cadaveric bodies, histology laboratories, and a museum of manufactured anatomical models). A 3D anatomy laboratory is also available in the male and female sections.   

Vision : In line with the College's vision, the department of Anatomy seeks to be a distinguished center in academic and clinical anatomy, and in education, scientific research, and community service.

Mission : The department's mission extends the college's mission by graduating competent physicians who provide high quality medical services and are qualified to complete their medical specializations inside and outside the Kingdom, while training them to conduct scientific research to contribute to community service and to scientific and medical advancement at outstanding, international levels.

Objectives:

Teaching objectives: for college of Medicine students, the department aims to enable students to:

  • Understand anatomical terminology and use it correctly.
  • Know the detailed surface and internal anatomy of the human body
  • Know the microstructure of the organs and tissue of the body.
  • Understand normal human embryological development and the possible congenital anomalies and recognize their clinical features through practical dissection and study of parts previously dissected by department members, and review of the specimens in the department's museum.

For the students of Applied Medical Sciences: The department teaches anatomy to second year students. by the end of the program, students will have become more familiar with various parts of the body and studied the relationship among organs and how they function and understood anatomical terminology.
For students of the college of Nursing: The department teaches anatomy in the second year. By the end of the program, nursing students will have achieved knowledge of the different parts of the body and the surface anatomy of the human body, and an understanding of the information about the body systems.

Research Objectives: Faculty members conduct medical research and publish it in the relevant scientific journals and conferences.

Academic Programs

  • The department does not award a Bachelor's degree in the medicine and surgery program but it contributes integrated courses with eleven other departments toward granting the bachelor's degree.
  • The department does not award a Bachelor's degree in the Medical Laboratory Technology program at the college of applied sciences. instead it offers interrelated courses with other courses toward the Bachelor's degree.
  • The department does not award a Bachelor's degree in the Nursing Science program at the college of Nursing. instead it offers interrelated courses with other courses toward the Bachelor's degree.

Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery

It is a single program for the college of medicine, not for the department only. the department participates alongside eleven other departments in granting the Bachelor's degree.
